Troubleshooting a Power Tilt Trim Unit - Photo 2

The tilt and trim system of your outboard or sterndrive is one of the most important features on your boat, providing smooth operation of your engine during bosting and when it's raised up to safeguard against damage during loading onto a trailer.power tilt trim unit f100 This is an electro-hydraulic system, so it uses an electric motor to operate a hydraulic pump that forces hydraulic fluid to actuators to raise or lower the engine for trimming and trailering. The motor, reservoir/assembly unit and hydraulic fluid are all exposed to saltwater, so they tend to wear out quickly.

If your power tilt trim motor won't raise or lower the engine, leaks in the raised position, or doesn't stay trimmed when you let go of the helm switch, you probably need to check the condition of the hydraulic pump and the tilt/trim solenoids and relays.power tilt trim unit f100 Locate the blue and green wires on your trim motor (Photo 2). Energizing the blue wire will raise the engine, while energizing the green will lower it. Usually, only the blue and green wires are connected at the motor; if either of these doesn't work, the problem is likely elsewhere on the system. Before touching any of the wires, be sure to disconnect the battery switch and ensure that the area is well-ventilated since you'll be dealing with flammable liquids and electrical wiring.
