Reasons to Have Your Fuel Pump Checked

For many cars, the fuel pump is essential to delivering the right amount of gas to the engine at the correct time. It’s a hard-working motor that takes the liquid and pumps it under high pressure to the engine so it can be burned to make energy to move the car forward. The fuel pump is a small electric motor that is housed inside the fuel tank or on the fuel tank module (depending on the car). It’s not uncommon for these motors to last the entire life of the vehicle under normal operating conditions. However, a failing pump can cause major performance and drivability issues for the vehicle.

If the fuel pump fails, steps one through five in the process will stop happening. Without the proper flow of fuel to the engine, there will be no power and the car won’t move. The problem could also be caused by a bad fuel filter that is restricting the flow of gasoline to the engine or by debris in the tank that is causing problems for the pump.

Most fuel pumps are made of durable metal and plastic materials and have a long service life. But they will eventually fail, especially if there are rust and debris in the tank that is causing damage to the pump. If you see a lot of sediment in your fuel tank, it is important to clean it out to reduce the risk of damage to the fuel pump.

Another reason to have your fuel pump checked is if you are having trouble starting your vehicle. If your engine is struggling to turn over or doesn’t even start, the problem could be the fuel pump. If the problem isn’t a problem with the fuel line, the mechanic will usually replace the fuel pump to get your car back on the road.

The Fuel Pump Is Running Out of Fuel

Leaving your fuel tank too low on a regular basis can cause premature wear on the fuel pump. It relies on the surrounding fuel to cool and lubricate it, so when the fuel level gets low, the pump has to work harder to draw gas from the bottom of the tank. This causes the pump to overheat and causes it to wear out faster.

You can avoid this problem by making sure your fuel tank is always full and by replacing the fuel filter on a regular basis. It is also important not to drive the car with a very low tank of gas. This can stir up rust and other debris in the tank that will cause a new fuel pump to wear out faster than it would otherwise. When removing the fuel tank to access the pump, you should take the time to drain and completely remove all the debris that is in the tank. This will help protect the new fuel pump and extend its lifespan.
