Types of Outboard Propellers

One of the most common types of boat is the outboard propeller. These devices come in two major varieties, electric and mechanical.

Mechanical types require a motor to be installed and they are powered by electricity. There are many advantages to these devices over the others. They produce less noise and they are quiet as well. When this type of device is used, it is necessary that one is able to install the motor properly.

Mechanical types do not create any water friction when used. This allows for easier sailing. A motor attached to these types of devices produce enough power to propel the boat forward when using less speed. However, when the boat uses more speed, it will require an additional accessory.

Electrical types of outboard propellers do not require any additional accessories and the motors are usually fairly small. It is important that these types of devices are properly installed so that they do not overheat and cause a fire hazard. Once the propeller is properly installed, it should be attached with either a stainless steel cable or with tape.

It is also important that when the propeller is removed, it is unplugged from the engine. When this type of device is powered by electricity, it will need to be plugged into an outlet. It is important that the outlets used should be located where there are no harmful vibrations. In addition, one should always tie off any wires attached to the propeller, especially when traveling at high speeds.

If one wants to have an expert come out and install the device, it is necessary to make sure that he has the proper knowledge and training. The technician should understand the proper installation procedure and how to take care of the device after installation. A professional may be needed if there is damage done to the device during installation.

Sometimes one may find the propeller itself is damaged. When this happens, it is necessary to remove the devices rotor from the engine to get to the repair. Once the device is unscrewed, it is necessary to change the impeller assembly.

To insure that the outboard propeller is in good working condition, it is necessary to maintain the device and to change the bearings periodically. A new bearing for each trip will prevent unnecessary stress. Using the correct cleaning fluids, one can keep the machine clean as well.
