A propeller shaft is one of the many parts of a diesel engine that propels the crankshaft. This shaft connects the engine to the propeller spool, which is located inside the hull of the boat. The shaft rotates at high speeds, thus propelling the boat. Different types of shafts are available, depending on the purpose and application. A shaft can be made of brass, bronze, steel, titanium, iron, and other alloys.

The shaft's configuration, the type of driving device it is designed to work with, and the working environment and any known limitations dictate the type of shaft required for a particular application. A drive shaft, usually called a drive-in drive, shaft, driving shaft, tail-shaft, propeller shaft or Cardan shaft is usually a simple metal shaft that transmits power and rotation to the propeller. shafts that translate rotational energy into electrical energy are called shaft drive systems. These shaft drive systems are typically used in applications that require high torque, such as powering a light aircraft.

When you have a look at some of the larger prop shafts used in commercial and military jet aircraft, you will notice that they are made of a thick, heavy brass material. Brass shafts are ideal for high-speed crankshaft engines because of their high efficiency and relative strength. Many marine shafts are also constructed from a heavy grade of copper, an affordable yet strong metal that works well in applications requiring high torque and/or high speed.

Unlike the other components of the propeller shaft--the drive and support blocks--the shaft bearing is directly attached to the shaft. The shaft bearing, often called a hub, rotates around a sealed bearing housing. The bearing provides a stable and neutral interface with the lower half of the propeller shaft.

A wheeled attachment is the most common type of shaft attachment for rear-wheel drive trucks and boats, and they can also be fitted to rear-axle trucks and boats. Wheeled shafts are most often used for applications where there is limited ground clearance, such as on small-sized trucks, boats and recreational vehicles. Most rear-axle drive trucks and boats come with a counterweight system to counter balance the vehicle weight, whereas wheeled vehicles tend to be designed for better handling on dry land and over dirt surfaces.

One interesting trend emerging in the field of aerospace engineering is the use of propeller shaft drives on helicopters. There are a number of companies currently in the market selling high-tech shaft drives for use on light-weight aerial vehicles. The future of commercial aviation appears to be leaning heavily towards automation, and the development of highly efficient robotic systems may soon render the need for human pilots obsolete. The adoption of robotic systems to provide piloted flight is already underway.
