An engine gasket and silicone seal have a common origin, the fact that they are both made out of the same basic materials. Typically, the gasket is made out of hardened petroleum plastic (polyvinyl chloride or PVC) and the seal is typically made out of a rubber compound, typically silicone. They are both intended to function as shock absorbers for an engine, although the silicone seal may be used for this purpose as well.

Over time, both of these materials will develop some amount of friction against each other and the seal will wear down over time. This will result in some amount of waste gas and pressure loss. The engine gasket set will generally begin to leak to start the vehicle and will continue to do so until the vehicle is shut off at the brake locks. The silicone seal will also begin to leak as the vehicle's compression blows through it and the gasket set will ultimately fail. It's important to know this very basic information about the two so you'll be prepared if you ever encounter one of these problems.

There are several causes of an engine gasket set failing. One of these causes is simply part misuse. Over time, the gaskets will become misaligned and worn down to their component areas, causing them to pull away from the valve covers and valve bodies. Other causes could be cylinder head misalignment, excessive corrosion, and so on. It's important to know these various parts' exact location and condition in order to avoid any potential gasket failure in the future.

One possible way to keep the gaskets in your engine sealed is by using a high quality silicone fluid in addition to the oil you use. Some high performance engine seals even employ technology that allows them to expand with temperature and contract when necessary. In this manner, the gasket never has to lift up or lower when it's supposed to, saving you money and energy in the long run. If you have any doubts about using these silicone gaskets, consider the manufacturer's instructions for proper and correct use. Using incorrect fluid can also cause an engine seals problem.

Even though your engine gaskets must work properly, they still must remain within an engine's breathing space. As long as this limit is not exceeded, the engine won't have any problems but overheating and carbon monoxide poisoning do happen, sometimes. The problem is the expansion and contraction can both occur at the same time, leading to an explosion of gasses inside the engine compartment. Again, it's important to know the correct amount of inflation to have the engine gaskets protect your engine from this danger.

Even though these two pieces play major roles, they're usually not all you need to know about an engine gasket set. One thing I should point out is that you don't just have to replace the gaskets on your engine. There are also different head gaskets for different combustion chambers. You should know the exact size of the seals your car needs. And last of all, don't use any cheap sealant on your engine.
