How to Troubleshoot a Trim and Tilt Switch Assy

Brand new Carling rocker switch labeled "Tilt/Trim" (the switch body & cover, not the actuator inside the switch) from the marine industry-leading manufacturer.trim tilt switch assy This single-pole, double throw ("ON"-"OFF"") switch is the control for the hydraulic ram that raises and lowers your motor in the power tilt/trim system built into most outboards and I/Os.

Whenever you depress your trim/tilt switch and nothing happens, it's a good idea to follow a few common sense tips.trim tilt switch assy This will help to isolate the reason why it's not working; either a problem with the motor itself, the electrical circuit or the mechanical part of the system.

The first tip is to listen to the motor while you operate the command switch up or down. If the ram doesn't activate when you push the switch, it's usually an indication that the motor itself or the start relay/solenoid are not operating. If you do hear a slight click while pushing the control switch, this indicates that power is reaching the motor through the control or trim switch and the wiring between.

To further isolate the problem, you can test the limit switch circuit by applying 12V directly to the purple wire connector and to the two blue power wires on one side of it. Applying voltage to the blue wire will raise the motor; energize the green wire and it will lower the engine.

Lastly, check the switches for continuity with an ohmmeter. The RED wire from the commander switch connects to the PURPLE wire and then to the BLUE wire through the trim/tilt limit switch. The RED wire from the trailer UP switch also connects to the BLUE wire through the limit switch. An ohmmeter should show continuity in the up position and none in the down.
